Yup - they're turbines, anyway. We used to heat up our MRE's on the exhaust plate, until they started putting chemical heaters into the MRE packs. Maybe the army got wise that Joe was burning 50 gallons a jet fuel to heat up his chicken a la king...
There's a lot of hot air and fumes coming out of the back, that's why you've got to make sure the rear is clear before you fire it up. The reality is there's plenty of time to amble out of the way when you hear it start up, there's no real danger.
