There's going to be language in this that I wouldn't ordinarily use - "man up" is a very benign example, there will be much, much worse in the future - but language common in the vernacular of the military that unconsciously reinforces the patriarchy opposing Newcom and people like her. I only point it out here because when the worse language comes, hopefully it won't be so shocking as to take anyone out of the story.

I think it's probably like the first time you wreck a car. You could get off easy or it could be something that haunts you every time you get behind the wheel. For newcom I think it's in the middle somewhere...

She froze up - for all his talk, Buck does the same thing when he’s first confronted by the enemy tanks later on... courage is a funny thing, sometimes it just leaves you standing there with your mouth hanging open.
