Even her own parents don't think she can do it!
Assuming this is college graduation, that means she went OCS. Big points for getting a real education and avoiding West Point and ROTC.
Also, as a parent it's a little time late to "forbid" anything if college is water under the bridge.

I have to admit to a little retconning, because I originally meant for her to have attended military schools straight up to West Point and come out of that pipeline. But when it came time to showing a graduation, I thought the mortarboard caps would read faster as a graduation than a military style thing. I also planned for her to come from a rich, political family that pulled strings to get her into a combat leadership role and now I've abandoned that whole subplot too. Somehow since I started this, the question of women taking leadership roles in combat fields has either gotten more normalized or displaced by other military controversies so it doesn't seem like such a important theme anymore. So now the theme is just trying to earn respect in a male dominated field I guess. This whole thing has gotten away from me! I guess that's good, because its writing itself now...
