Do you work in layers? The pinup elsewhere would suggest that you do, but I'm unclear as to how that fits in with a painterly style

I always work in layers, sometimes I'll have 10 or 20 - specifically to prevent the brush strokes from interacting with what's underneath before I'm ready. The last thing I do is collapse all the layers and then work it over again. In this case I originally did two completely different versions, but I liked the unpatriotic one so much better I just modified it (with a layer) to convert it.

This is what the original Stars and Stripes looked like (not really finished)...
