what effect are you using to make that rotor wash?
I take a lighter version of the ground color, almost white, and turn the opacity down to like 5%, and sort of daubed it in. Then I took straight white for some highlights. Then there’s an effect brush called “hurricane” that does little swirlies. In the old version of painter there was another effect brush that had kind of a cyclone effect, and that would have worked great. But they don’t have it anymore :(. I did it on a second layer so I could erase away any obscuration on the Joe stepping on the plant to try and give it some depth…
But I think where I really went wrong on this now that I reflect a bit, is that I had two competing models in my head. One was the big loops of smoke like when trautman’s chopper landed in First Blood, and the other was an internet picture where the dust looked more like cotton balls. I tried to both, I shoulda just done one.

Wash itself is pretty good. Maybe blur outlines of objects in dust to add some substance to wash?
That’s a good idea - I will try that on the next helicopter landing! There’s definitely going to be more…

Stupid rotor wash, I struggled with this and still hate the outcome. But at some point you have to call it good enough and start the next page.
